The Remarks goes retro to celebrate 25 years

It was 25 years ago this month that Queenstown’s second ski area opened to crowds of skiers donning multi coloured one pieces and long, straight skis and this Sunday (August 1) The Remarkables will wind back the years for an eighties-themed party to mark this milestone birthday.

Among the retro fun is a Chinese Downhill Competition from the top of the Alta chair to the bottom, finishing in front of the Base Building. The mad cap downhill used to be an annual fixture on the event calendar at the Ski Area.

The Remarkables has always been child friendly and this Sunday kids can get colourful with FREE face-painting and let loose on the bouncy castle from 11am-2pm.  There’s also the chance to take part in Giant musical chairs on the beginner area

For the young and young at heart, there’s FREE AJ Hackett horizontal bungy lined up, as well as a Gelandesprung – an old school European ski jumping competition which featured at several Remarkables events in the early days.

Adults and kids should dress in their best 80’s ski gear to be in to win a prize for the best retro outfits.

And in the spirit of the best ‘80’s entertainment, legendary Kiwi eighties rocker Jordan Luck is set to blast his greatest anthems from 2pm with the Jordan Luck Band.

Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence said several people who worked at The Remarkables on that first day are still working for NZSki.

“Judy Stevens-Dickerson is still at The Remarkables, Hamish McCrostie is now Ski Area Manager at Coronet Peak, Duncan Smith is on the NZSki board of directors and there are many more who have been here since those very early days.

“Sunday is about celebrating how far The Remarkables has come and showing appreciation to the many long-standing staff members who have contributed so much to this mountain.

“As a thank you we are holding a get-together for former key staff on Saturday 31July where I expect to see some old faces again and have a great reminisce about the past.”

Festivities kick off at 9am on Sunday August 1 and there is free transport for all comers from the Snow Centre.

Entrants for the ‘Chinese’ Downhill Competition and the Gelandesprung can register on the day at Guest Services, up until 10.30am
